Umiam Lake, one of Shillong’s most prominent tourist attractions, is a wide and gorgeous reservoir that draws visitors from all over the country. The Lake, also known as “Bara Pani” or “Big Water,” is part of a dam that was built as the first Hydel Power Project in this North-East Indian state. The combined catchment area of the dam and the lake is around 220 square kilometres.
Originally intended as a reservoir for a dam, the Lake rapidly became one of Shillong’s most popular tourist destinations, serving as a popular destination for kayaking, water cycling, boating, and scooting. Row boats, paddle boats, sailing boats, cruise boats, and speed boats are also available for tourists to ride.
Near its banks, the lake is a lovely garden called Lum Nehru Park that adds to its allure. Additionally, there are a few little islands that rise out of the water and appear really lovely. The peaceful Umiam Lake is surrounded by hills on all sides and lined by spectacular motorways and bridges. It is one of the most scenic region. Many visitors flock to Umiam Lake to admire the scenery.
The Umiam Lake offers breathtaking views. There are several landmarks from which you may shoot the waterways and the hills beyond; the golden hours here draw photographers from all around since they can be either cloaked in enigmatic clouds or bathed in blazing sunlight.
Umiam Lake is frequently contrasted with the lovely lakes of Scotland because of its attractive surroundings. The government-run Orchid Lake Resort, which is located close to the lake and offers lodge lodging and dining with lake views, welcomes visitors. A swimming pool at the resort’s edge of a hill overlooks the lake and provides an enjoyable experience.
