When I first learned about the Ambubachi Mela at Assam’s Kamakhya Temple, I was captivated. This sacred site transforms into a bustling center of devotion, drawing thousands of pilgrims and curious visitors alike. More than a religious event, it embodies a profound celebration of faith, fertility, and the divine feminine.
Ambubachi marks the annual menstruation period of Maa Kamakhya. Held annually at Assam’s Kamakhya Temple, revered as one of the foremost among the 51 Shakti Peethas worldwide, the festival occurs in June each year. According to the Hindu Calendar the Temple is closed for three days from the 7th day in the “Ashadh” to the tenth day of the month. In 2024 it is celebrated 22nd June to 26th June 2024. It is also called as the ‘Mahakumbh of the East’, attracting Sadhus, Aghoris and devotees to experience the power of the divine feminine and participate in the world’s largest Tantra fair. The Ambubachi Mela symbolizes the celebration of fertility and the feminine divine within Hinduism. Upon entering Kamakhya Temple, I felt a surreal and intensely powerful energy that gave me goosebumps. The dynamic atmosphere of the crowd and the presence of Maa Kamakhya infused the temple with a potent and electrifying ambiance. The people of Assam eagerly anticipate this divine manifestation of energy year after year.
The Ambubachi Mela spans four days, brimming with rituals and festivities. For the initial three days, the temple doors remain closed, symbolizing Earth’s impurity. During this period, Assamese people cover all temples, including indigenous shrines, to honor the fertile phase of Maa Kamakhya. A temple priest shared with me the significance of the ‘Prasad’. On the first day, the sculpture of Maa Kamakhya’s Yoni is veiled in a white cloth, which miraculously turns crimson by the fourth day. Devotees from around the globe eagerly seek even a small fragment of this cloth, believing in its divine powers of fertility and prosperity.
On the fourth day, the temple doors swing open, marking a day of immense joy and vibrant processions. Festivities abound with dancing, singing, and diverse celebrations. Notably, the Ambubachi Mela encompasses the Tantra Puja performed throughout these four days, lending a mystical essence to the event.
Among its many facets, the Ambubachi Mela stands out for challenging social taboos. It celebrates womanhood and sheds light on subjects often concealed in secrecy. It serves as a potent example of Indian society’s acceptance and respect for women and their well-being. Beyond mere festivity, the Ambubachi Mela weaves a rich tapestry of stories that highlight women’s empowerment. This extraordinary event left a lasting mark on my heart and mind, filling me with spiritual fulfilment, cultural appreciation, and a profound connection to the divine femininity.
My journey to the Ambubachi Mela was an unparalleled experience. Engaging with the residents at the temple, listening to their stories and beliefs, and viewing the festival through their eyes was profoundly moving. Witnessing the vibrant energy of the Tantra Mela was an enchanting experience for me. The diverse cultural tapestry of Assam painted my heart with a kaleidoscope of colours.
These four days were among the most spiritually enriching days of my life. The majestic crowd fostered an atmosphere of unity and devotion. Additionally, savouring the local Assamese cuisine was a delightful treat that resonated deeply.
I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to visit Kamakhya Temple during the Ambubachi Mela at least once. The place and the festival are certain to energize you, awakening both your spiritual and social consciousness.
Woahhh! Hello there! Stop! You don't wanna do this.
