When I first heard about the Ambubachi Mela at the Kamakhya Temple in Assam, I was intrigued. This holy place becomes a hub of activity where thousands of devotees and curious onlookers gather. It is more than a religious festival; it is a celebration of their faith, fertility, and the divine feminine.
Ambubachi is the annual menstruation cycle of Maa Kamakhya. It is celebrated every year in the Kamakhya Temple of Assam. It is believed to be one of the most prominent of the 51 Shakti Peethas around the world. The festival takes place in June every year. As per the Hindu calendar, the temple remains closed for three days from the 7th day of the “Ashadh” to the tenth day of the month.
In 2026, it will be celebrated from 22nd June to 26th June 2026. It is also known as the ‘Mahakumbh of the East’. It draws sadhus, aghoris, and devotees to witness the power of the divine feminine and witness the world’s largest Tantra fair. The Ambubachi Mela is a symbol of the celebration of fertility and the divine feminine in Hinduism. When I entered the Kamakhya Temple, I felt a surreal and very powerful energy that gave me goosebumps. The dynamic energy of the crowd and the presence of Maa Kamakhya filled the temple with a very potent and electrifying energy. The people of Assam look forward to this divine manifestation of energy every year.
The Ambubachi Mela is a four-day event, packed with rituals and celebrations. For the first three days, the doors of the temple are shut, representing the impurity of the Earth. During this time, the Assamese community shrouds all the temples, including the native ones, to mark the fertile phase of Maa Kamakhya. A temple priest explained the importance of the ‘Prasad’ to me. On the first day, the statue of Maa Kamakhya’s Yoni is covered with a white cloth, which amazingly turns red by the fourth day. People from all over the world are desperate to get even a piece of this cloth, as they believe in its miraculous powers of fertility and prosperity.
On the fourth day, the doors of the temple open, and this is a day of extreme happiness and colorful festivities. There is dancing, singing, and various celebrations. It is pertinent to note that the Ambubachi Mela includes the Tantra Puja, which is conducted over the four days, giving the festival a mystical touch.
Among its many aspects, the Ambubachi Mela is special in that it breaks social taboos. It is a celebration of womanhood and brings to the fore issues that are normally shrouded in mystery and secrecy. It is a strong symbol of the acceptance and reverence that Indian society has for women and their well-being. The Ambubachi Mela is more than just a celebration; it is a kaleidoscope of stories that bring to the fore the empowerment of women. This remarkable experience has left an indelible mark on my heart and mind, filling me with spiritual satisfaction and reverence for the divine femininity.
My experience in reaching the Ambubachi Mela was an experience in itself. Interacting with the locals in the temple and understanding their experiences and perspectives about the festival was a heart-wrenching experience. Experiencing the energetic atmosphere of the Tantra Mela was an enchanting experience for me. The cultural diversity of Assam has painted my heart with a kaleidoscope of colors.
These four days were some of the most spiritually uplifting days of my life. The grand crowd created a sense of oneness and devotion. Moreover, relishing the local Assamese food was a treat to my taste buds, and it touched my heart.
I strongly recommend that everyone should come to Kamakhya Temple during the Ambubachi Mela at least once in their lifetime. The place and the event will surely give you the required boost to awaken your spiritual and social awareness.
