Sivasagar: Archaeological Heritage of Assam

Sivasaagr

Sivasagar

The town gets its name from the large man-made water tank/lake named Sivasagar Tank/lake. Ranghar, a two-story amphitheater, was used by the kings to watch bull fights and other sports. Shivadol is an important monument that claims to be the highest temple in Asia, sporting a golden tip Trishul on the top. Bishnudol and Shani Mandir are two other temples located in the same campus that can be visited.

Rang Ghar:

Rang Ghar is situated near the Rangpur Palace, popularly known as Talatal Ghar. During the reign of the Ahom kings, this two-storied building used to be the sports pavilion where the kings and the nobles could enjoy a buffalo or cock fight along with the annual Bihu celebration. The structure of this building is the most interesting thing about it. The roof of Rang Ghar is built in the shape of an inverted boat, which is representative of the Ahom architectural style.

Talatal Ghar:

Talatal Ghar, which is also designated as the Rangpur Palace, is considered to be one of the largest and beautiful Ahom structural creations. It is prohibited for any person to get into the underground areas. The Talatal Ghar, according to mythology, contains two secret underground tunnels, as well as three basement floors, which were designated as secret exits during war.

Shivadol:

One of the three main temples of Sivasagar, Sivadol rises majestically from the banks of Sivasagar tank. It rises to a height of 104 feet and is topped with a golden dome 8 feet in height. It is the most important venue for Shiva worshipers to congregate during the festival of Shivratri.

Joysagar Tank:

The Joyasagar tank is one of the most famous tourist places in Sivasagar because of its size and religious significance. There are also several famous temples such as Joydol, Devi Ghar, Sri Surya Mandir, Ganesh Mandir, and Natigosai Dol within the tank complex that have their importance in religion, history, and archaeology as well.

Kareng Ghar:

Kareng Ghar, also known as the Garhgaon Palace. Rajeshwar Singha restored the current Kareng Ghar, which is made of wood and stones. The palace used to have several chambers, but only a few survive today. The palace was once encircled by vast water-filled moats and fortified borders, remnants of which may still be seen.

Sivasagar has several pieces of archaeological evidence of the illustrious Ahom rulers who ruled over the Assam region around 600 years back. Most of them remain in good condition in their current state despite several earthquakes and calamities, though the structures themselves are splendid pieces of art and the Royal signature of the Ahoms can be easily made out. The entire city is well connected through highways and can be accessed within an hour or two from the nearby airports at both Jorhat and Dibrugarh.

The town itself has a diverse cultural population that lives in perfect harmony with one another.

Bihu, Durga Puja, Makar Sakranti, Baishakhi, Dol Yatra, and other festivals are celebrated. The whole city is well connected with highways and can be reached within an hour or two from the nearby airports in Jorhat and Dibrugarh.
